Breeding Philosophy: Forage-Bred Angus & Shorthorn for Profitable Beef

Our breeding focuses on fertility, temperament, calving ease and calf survivability. We also prioritise soundness of structure and balance, all whilst monitoring carcase conformation and growth rate on minimal inputs. Above all, we aim to produce profitable and efficient suckler cows that are easy to manage.

Pedigrees Proven in our Own Commercial Herd

We have developed our commercial herd entirely from our own pedigree genetics. Our 220 home-bred commercial cows run with Chapelton Angus and Shorthorn bulls every season. Their records, including carcase records, are fed back into our pedigree breeding programme.

Our genetic analysis currently considers over 4,400 carcase records and over 11,000 animals. We have installed a camera-based foot scoring system, and our cows and heifers are scored for temperament, calving ease, and udder and teat suspension at calving. We also record birthweight and birth vigour scores.

What This Means for Our Customers

  • Calving made simple: calving ease and calf survival come first.
  • Fertility you can rely on: cows that hold and semen-tested bulls that work.
  • Quiet cattle for safer working: temperament is simply non-negotiable.
  • Forage performance: growth on grass and cows that perform without concentrate.
  • Structural soundness: feet, legs, and udders that are built to last.

How We Select

We only retain the best heifers as replacements. Our pedigree and commercial cattle are run on a forage-focused system where input costs are strictly controlled. They must perform in this environment for their progeny to be selected as replacements.

Stockmanship and our own management data are our main selection tools. Animals must pass on both fronts to be considered to enter the herd. Retained bulls must come from cow-lines which have consistently performed without the need for input.

Only the best bulls are offered for sale. They are semen tested and continuously monitored to make sure all of our sale bulls will get the job done.
